AI search visibility: AEO/GEO

When someone asks AI for a business like yours, does it recommend you?

It happens in a chat window, in about four seconds. Ask ChatGPT for the best dentist in your city and it names three practices. We find out whether you're one of them — and fix what's keeping you off the list.

An AI visibility audit shows what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI say about your business when a customer asks — and what to change so they recommend you.

Fixed price. No retainer required. Delivered remotely, anywhere in the US.

    What it is
A fixed-price AI visibility audit: what the five engines say about your business today, and how to fix it.
    Who it's for
Businesses people search for by name or category — dentists, contractors, clinics, retailers, trades, professional services.
    What it costs
Free mirror test → $1,200 audit → $2,500/mo 90-day sprint → $500/mo monitoring. Audit fee is credited toward a Sprint.
    What we don't promise
No guaranteed rankings or citations. AI answers change by the day; we sell the diagnosis and the work, not a fantasy.
    You ask ChatGPT
“Who are the best family dentists in town?”
“Here are a few well-regarded options: Silver Sage Dental, Galena Family Dentistry, and Mt. Rose Dental Group. For a family practice, …”
Three names. None of them are you — and nobody told you the question was asked.

What is an AI visibility audit?

An AI visibility audit is a fixed-price report that shows what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews say about your business when a customer asks for what you sell — and what to change so they recommend you instead of your competitor. Memeador runs 25–40 real buyer questions across five AI engines, checks whether the answers are even accurate, scores the gap against your competition, then fixes the site. The audit is $1,200, credited toward a Sprint if you start one within 30 days.

    The ground moved

Being found used to mean ranking. Now it means being named.

Search still matters — it's just no longer the front door. A growing share of buying questions are answered inside a chat window, where there's no page one to fight for. There's a shortlist, and someone wrote it without asking you.

Read that second number again. You can rank first in Google Maps for your category and still never be named by ChatGPT. The two lists barely overlap — and most business owners have never checked which one they're on. That's the gap we close.

    The diagnosis

Why the AI answers skip you

It is almost never because a competitor is better. It is because the machine can't read you, can't quote you, and has no reason to trust you. Nobody on your team has ever asked the engines the questions your buyers ask, so nobody has seen you're missing from the answer.

    FAIL 01

It can't read your site at all

Most sites exist only after JavaScript runs. Google spends the money to run the script; ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude mostly don't. To them your homepage is blank. On our own site, the homepage went from 174 words a machine could read to 7,459 — counted from the HTML a crawler gets when it doesn't run scripts.

    FAIL 02

Nothing states what you actually are

Your headline is a slogan. An answer engine needs a quotable sentence: what you do, where, for whom, and what it costs. If your page never says "we are a family dental practice on the south side of town," no engine will ever say it for you.

    FAIL 03

    Nobody else vouches for you

AI trusts what other people say about you far more than what you say about yourself. In a 2026 study of 102,025 AI answers, 97% of the sources cited pointed somewhere other than the brand's own website. Reviews, directories, local press and forums are the game — your own website is barely any of it.

    FAIL 04

Or it's vouching for the wrong facts

When AI does mention you, the details are often wrong. AI platforms are only about 68% accurate on business contact information (SOCi, 2026), and 40% of owners who checked found incorrect information about themselves (Squarespace, 2026). A wrong address or an old service list costs you customers quietly.

    What you get

    Three deliverables, in plain English

    01

    The Baseline Report

What the five engines say about you today, across 25–40 real buyer questions written the way your customers ask them — the answers quoted verbatim, your competitors named, and every factual error about your business flagged. This is the part nobody else shows you.

    02

The Fix List + three ready-to-publish assets

A prioritised, plain-English list of exactly what to change, ranked by impact — plus three written assets you can publish that week: an answer-first rewrite of your most important page, an FAQ set engines can quote, and your business facts made consistent across Google, Bing and the directories ChatGPT reads.

    03

    The Dashboard

A live view of whether it's working: AI assistant visits in your Google Analytics, separated by engine, alongside your monthly re-run of the same questions — citation rate (how often you're named), share of voice (you versus competitors) and answer accuracy — so you can watch the mentions climb.

    How it works

    Four steps, about a quarter

    01

    The mirror test

We show you three real questions where a competitor is recommended and you are not — the questions, the engines' answers verbatim, the competitor they named, and the two things most likely to be why. One page, free, no pitch deck.

Local Presence Setup — $2,500 one-time. Google Business Profile, Bing Places and the key directories set up with consistent business facts, plus a review-request flow. Buy it alone, add it to an audit, or get it inside a Sprint. This is the most defensible part of the work, and often the biggest single lever for businesses that get found locally.
Good fitBusinesses people search for by name or category — dentists, contractors, clinics, retailers, trades, law and accounting firms. You want to be found by new customers, not just the ones you already know.
Probably not a fitIf 90% of your work comes from referrals and you want to keep it that way, save your money. We'd rather tell you now.
    Proof, not promises

We ran this on our own business first.

Before we sold it, we did it. Memeador's own homepage was invisible to machines: a beautiful page that AI crawlers rendered as a blank. We fixed the foundation, then measured. This is the before and after, on our own website, with our own numbers.

    174
words a machine could read on the homepage before
    7,459
words it can read now — served as static, pre-rendered HTML, with a proper sitemap and hreflang for each locale

We also publish the baseline: a written record of which AI engines recognise our own products, which describe them wrongly, and which have never heard of them. Most agencies would rather you didn't see that table. We put it in the open, because the first honest step is finding out you're not on the list.

    Straight comparison

SEO, AI search, AEO, GEO — what's the difference, and what do you actually need?

The words matter less than the job — and most of the industry still just calls this SEO. Here's how the terms relate, and where our work sits.

ApproachWhat it optimises forWhere it shows upDo you need it?
SEO — search engine optimisationA ranked list of links on GoogleGoogle, BingYes, always. It's the foundation.
AI search visibility / AI SEOBeing named inside a spoken answerChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, ClaudeYes — this is the new front door. Most people just call it SEO.
AEO — answer engine optimisationBeing the quoted answer, not a linkAI Overviews, featured snippets, voiceSame job as above, older name for it.
GEO — generative engine optimisationBeing recommended in a generated answerThe same engines as aboveSame job again, newer name for it. We use the words so you can vet vendors, not because they change the work.
Paid adsA slot you rent by the clickSearch, socialMaybe — but it stops the day you stop paying. We don't sell it.

We do the first three as one piece of work. We don't manage paid media — that's a different job, and we'll say so.

    Questions

    Asked often, answered plainly

What is an AI visibility audit?

An AI visibility audit is a fixed-price report that shows what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google's AI Overviews say about your business when a customer asks for what you sell, and what to change so they recommend you. We run 25–40 real buyer questions across five engines, score the gap against your competitors, then fix the site. The audit is $1,200 one-time, and it's credited toward a Sprint if you start one within 30 days.

How do I get ChatGPT to recommend my business?

Four things have to be true. One: the AI has to be able to read your site — most sites only exist once JavaScript runs, so AI crawlers see nothing. Two: your page has to state plainly what you do, where you do it and for whom, in text a machine can quote. Three: third parties have to say it too — in a 2026 study of 102,025 AI answers, 97% of the sources cited pointed somewhere other than the brand's own website. Four: your business details have to be consistent everywhere the machine looks, because the platforms are only about 68% accurate on contact information. We check all four and fix the ones you're missing.

What does AI search optimization cost?

The AI Visibility Audit is $1,200 one-time and is credited toward a Sprint started within 30 days. The 90-day AI Visibility Sprint is $2,500 per month, or $6,500 paid up front. Ongoing monitoring is $500 per month. The Mirror Test, which shows you three real questions where a competitor is recommended and you are not, is free.

How is this different from SEO?

Search engine optimization targets a ranked list of links, and it's still the foundation. AI search visibility targets a spoken recommendation with three or four names in it. The overlap is real, and Google's own guidance says AI search is largely SEO. What's different is the first job: Google spends money running the JavaScript that draws your page; ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude mostly don't, so they see a blank page where Google sees a site. We make sure there's something to read, something to quote, and enough third-party agreement for the machine to trust it.

Is this just SEO with a new name?

Mostly — and you should be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise. A June 2026 Fractl / Search Engine Land survey found 81% of marketers still call this work SEO when they talk about it internally, and Google's own guidance says answer-engine and generative-engine optimization is still SEO. They're right about the label. What changed is the surface: a chat window instead of a results page, a spoken shortlist instead of ten blue links, and machines that won't run your scripts. We sell the version of the work that makes a business quotable and trustworthy to those machines. We don't sell the acronyms.

Do you guarantee I'll be recommended by ChatGPT?

No, and anyone who does is selling you something they can't deliver. AI answers are generated fresh each time, the pools of sources they draw on change month to month, and a July 2026 review of 45 studies (arXiv 2607.14035) found no technique with a stable, cross-platform causal effect on discovery or revenue. What we guarantee is the diagnosis and the work: you'll know exactly what the engines say about you today, exactly why they skip you, exactly what we changed, and how the answers move month to month.

How do you track whether it worked?

The primary measure is the prompt battery: the same 25–40 buyer questions, re-run every month, recorded as citation rate (how often AI names you) and share of voice (how often you're named versus competitors) across five engines. We also track answer accuracy — whether the AI describes your business correctly — and AI referral traffic in Google Analytics using the native AI Assistant channel. Attribution for AI traffic is imperfect, and some of it still lands in Direct or Unassigned, so we treat the prompt battery as the leading indicator and the traffic as supporting colour.

Is my data safe, and do you use the real AI tools?

We query the public engines the same way your customers do, through the normal interfaces rather than private developer APIs that quietly return different answers. That means our numbers are the numbers your customers see. We need nothing beyond your public URL, your public business listings, and read-only access to Google Analytics.

Do you work with businesses anywhere, or only locally?

Yes — we work remotely with businesses anywhere in the United States. The method is identical whether you run a dental practice, a contracting business or a software company. Businesses that depend on being found locally are simply where the gap is easiest to see, because AI answers for local questions are about thirty times more selective than Google's map pack.

What do you need from me to start?

A URL, read access to Google Analytics, and one call to confirm who your buyers are and what they ask. We run the first baseline within a week and deliver the audit two business days later.
